Edward George Dyson (1865-1931) was an Australian poet, journalist and short story writer. At 19 he began writing verse, and a few years later embarked on a life of free-lance journalism which lasted until his death. His first notable work was The Golden Shanty, which appeared in the Bulletin, and many other short stories followed. In 1896 he published a volume of poems, Rhymes from the Mines, and in 1898 the first collection of his short stories, Below and On Top. In 1901 his first long story The Gold-Stealers was published in London, which was followed by In the Roaring Fifties in 1906. In the same year appeared Fact’ry ‘Ands, a series of more or less connected sketches dealing with factory life in Melbourne in a vein of humour. Various other stories and collections of stories were published in the Bookstall Series and will be found listed in Miller’s Australian Literature. Another volume of verse ‘Hello, Soldier! ‘ appeared in 1919.

 12 Million Black Voices

12 Million Black Voices

$3.55

12 Million Black Voices, first published in 1941, combines Wright’s prose with startling photographs selected by Edwin Rosskam from the Security Farm Administration files compiled during the Great Depression. The photographs include works by such giants as Walker Evans, Dorothea Lange, and Arthur Rothstein. From crowded, rundown farm shacks to Harlem storefront churches, the photos depict the lives of black people in 1930s America—their misery and weariness under rural poverty, their spiritual strength, and their lives in northern ghettos. Wright’s accompanying text eloquently narrates the story of these 90 pictures and delivers a powerful commentary on the origins and history of black oppression in this country. Also included are new prefaces by Douglas Brinkley, Noel Ignatiev, and Michael Eric Dyson. “Among all the works of Wright, 12 Million Black Voices stands out as a work of poetry, … passion, … and of love.”—David Bradley “A more eloquent statement of its kind could hardly have been devised.”—The New York Times Book Review

Excerpt: The 15 theorem of John H. Conway and W. A. Schneeberger (Conway-Schneeberger Fifteen Theorem), proved in 1993, states that if an integral quadratic form with integer matrix represents all positive integers up to 15, then it represents all positive integers. (All quadratic forms in this article are implicitly assumed to be positive definite.) The proof was complicated, and was never published. Manjul Bhargava found a much simpler proof which was published in 2000.This result is the best possible, as there are such forms as, for example, that represent all positive integers other than 15.A quadratic form representing all positive integers is sometimes called universal . For example,is universal because every positive integer can be written as a sum of 4 squares, by Lagrange’s four-square theorem . By the 15 theorem, to verify this it is sufficient to check that every positive integer up to 15 is a sum of 4 squares. (This does not give an alternative proof of Lagrange’s theorem, because Lagrange’s theorem is used in the proof of the 15 theorem.)A more precise version of the 15 theorem says that if an integral quadratic form with integral matrix represents the numbers 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 10, 14, 15 (sequence A030050 in OEIS ) then it represents all

Excerpt: Jacqueline Jill “Jacqui” Smith (born 3 November 1962) is a member of the British Labour Party. She served as the Member of Parliament for Redditch from 1997 until 2010 and was the first ever female Home Secretary, thus making her the third woman to hold one of the Great Offices of State after Margaret Thatcher (Prime Minister) and Margaret Beckett (Foreign Secretary). She was one of the MPs investigated by the parliamentary commissioner for standards over a variety of inappropriate expense claims. Smith was found to have “clearly” broken the rules on second home expenses and ordered to apologise. On 5 June 2009, she stood down as Home Secretary in the Cabinet reshuffle, and lost her seat as Member of Parliament for Redditch in the 2010 General Election. Born in Malvern, Worcestershire, Smith attended Dyson Perrins High School in Malvern. Her parents were teachers, and both Labour councillors; although her mother briefly joined the SDP. Her local MP, Conservative backbencher Sir Michael Spicer, recalled in Parliament in 2003 how he had first met her when he was addressing the sixth form at The Chase School, where Smith’s mother was a teacher. “So great was my eloquence that she immediately rushed off and joined the Labour Party.” Smith read PPE at Hertford College, Oxford and gained a PGCE from Worcester College of Higher Education. Working as a school teacher, Smith taught Economics at Arrow Vale High School in Redditch from 1986 to 1988 and at Worcester Sixth Form College, before becoming Head of Economics and GNVQ Co-ordinator at Haybridge High School, Hagley in 1990. Smith was selected to stand for election for Labour through an all-women shortlist. This method of selection was subsequently declared illegal in January 1996 as it breached s… More:

Sweeping across centuries and into the Aleutian Islands of Alaska’s Bering Sea, And She Was begins with a decision and a broken taboo when three starving Aleut mothers decide to take their fate into their own hands. Two hundred and fifty years later, by the time Brandy, a floundering, trashy, Latin-spewing cocktail waitress, steps ashore in the 1980s, Unalaska Island has absorbed their dark secret—a secret that is both salvation and shame. In a tense interplay between past and present, And She Was explores Aleut history, mummies, conquest, survival, and the seamy side of the 1980s in a fishing boomtown at the edge of the world, where a lost woman struggles to understand the gray shades between heroism and evil, and between freedom and bondage.

Chapters: Gideon Gartner, Timothy Ferriss, Angel Investor, Esther Dyson, Jason Calacanis, David S. Rose, Miles Spencer, Ron Conway, John May, Scott Kurnit. Excerpt: An angel investor or angel (also known as a business angel or informal investor ) is an affluent individual who provides capital for a business start-up , usually in exchange for convertible debt or ownership equity . A small but increasing number of angel investors organize themselves into angel groups or angel networks to share research and pool their investment capital. Description Source and extent of funding Angels typically invest their own funds, unlike venture capitalists , who manage the pooled money of others in a professionally-managed fund . Although typically reflecting the investment judgment of an individual, the actual entity that provides the funding may be a trust , business, limited liability company , investment fund , etc. Angel capital fills the gap in start-up financing between “friends and family” (sometimes humorously given the acronym FFF, which stands for “friends, family and fools”) who provide seed funding , and venture capital. Although it is usually difficult to raise more than a few hundred thousand dollars from friends and family, most traditional venture capital funds are usually not able to consider investments under US $1 2 million. Thus, angel investment is a common second round of financing for high-growth start-ups, and accounts in total for almost as much money invested annually as all venture capital funds combined, but into more than ten times as many companies (US $26 billion vs. $30.69 billion in the US in 2007, into 57,000 companies vs. 3,918 companies). Of the US companies that received angel funding in 2007, the average capital raised was about US $450,000. However, there is

Applications of Random Matrices in Physics

Applications of Random Matrices in Physics

$92.23

Random matrices are widely and successfully used in physics for almost 60-70 years, beginning with the works of Dyson and Wigner. Although it is an old subject, it is constantly developing into new areas of physics and mathematics. It constitutes now a part of the general culture of a theoretical physicist. Mathematical methods inspired by random matrix theory become more powerful, sophisticated and enjoy rapidly growing applications in physics. Recent examples include the calculation of universal correlations in the mesoscopic system, new applications in disordered and quantum chaotic systems, in combinatorial and growth models, as well as the recent breakthrough, due to the matrix models, in two dimensional gravity and string theory and the non-abelian gauge theories. The book consists of the lectures of the leading specialists and covers rather systematically many of these topics. It can be useful to the specialists in various subjects using random matrices, from PhD students to confirmed scientists.
