Eureka - Season One (DVD)

Eureka – Season One (DVD)

$30.85

This smart series from the Sci Fi Channel combines the strangeness of THE X-FILES with the diverse characters of NORTHERN EXPOSURE to create an innovative dramedy. A car accident leads U.S. Marshal Jack Carter (Colin Ferguson, COUPLING) to the small town of Eureka. The town is the brainchild of Albert Einstein and President Truman, and has become a haven for the smartest people in the country. Though Eureka appears to be like any other small city in the Northwest, its denizens make sure their home is never normal as they create the innovations that power the rest of the globe. As Eureka is kept a secret from the outside world, Allison Blake (Salli Richardson-Whitfield) acts a bridge between the town and the Pentagon. She and Carter bump heads, but their rivalry is driven by a heated chemistry that gives the show some zing. EUREKA also features the talents of genre favorites such as Joe Morton (BROTHER FROM ANOTHER PLANET), Debrah Farentino (EARTH 2), and Matt Frewer (MAX HEADROOM). This release includes the first season in its entirety.

101 Theory Drive: A Neuroscientist's Quest for Memory

101 Theory Drive: A Neuroscientist’s Quest for Memory

$11.99

An obsessive scientist and his eclectic team of researchers race to discover one of the hidden treasures of neuroscience—the physical makeup of memory—and in the process pursue a pharmaceutical wonder drug.Gary Lynch is the real thing, the epitome of the rebel scientist: malnourished, contentious, inspiring, explosive, remarkably ambitious, and consistently brilliant. He is one of the foremost figures of contemporary neuroscience, and his decades-long quest to understand the inner workings of the brain’s memory machine has begun to pay off. Award-winning journalist Terry McDermott spent nearly two years observing Lynch at work and now gives us a fascinating and dramatic account of daily life in his lab—the highs and lows, the drudgery and eureka moments, the agonizing failures. He provides detailed, lucid explanations of the cutting-edge science that enabled Lynch to reveal the inner workings of the molecular machine that manufactures memory. After establishing the building blocks, Lynch then set his sights on uncovering the complicated structure of memory as it is stored across many neurons. Adding practical significance to his groundbreaking work, Lynch discovered a class of drugs that could fix the memory machine when it breaks, drugs that would enhance brain function during the memory process and that hold out the possibility of cures for a wide range of neurological conditions, including Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Here is an essential story of science, scientists, and scientific achievement—galvanizing in the telling and thrilling in its far-reaching implications.

The show was hosted by John Byner , and produced by CTV at the CFTO Glen-Warren Studios in suburban Toronto. The series contained slapstick sketches, monologues, TV parodies, and performances by guest stand-up comics. Byner’s interactions with members of the studio audience, or with show producer Bob Einstein (who often came in to halt a sketch midway through), provided an early example of removing the fourth wall . Much of the humour on the show was considered risque during the original run of the series. The series utilized a rotating ensemble of supporting actors who backed Byner up in his sketches. Besides Einstein this group included Billy Van , Billy Barty , and Wayne and Shuster alumnus Tom Harvey.Versions Two versions of the show were produced: episodes that aired on the Showtime

Excerpt: Maximum snowfall or ice accretion The First North American Blizzard of 2010 was a winter storm and severe weather event that tracked from the U.S. states of California to Arizona through northern Mexico, the American Southwest, the Midwest, Southeast, and Mid-Atlantic regions. The storm created extensive flooding and landslides in Mexico, as well as historic snowfall totals in the Mid-Atlantic states, rivaling the Knickerbocker Storm of 1922. The storm stretched from Mexico and New Mexico to New Jersey before moving out to sea, then turning north to impact the Maritime Provinces of Canada. The storm caused deaths in Mexico, New Mexico, Maryland, and Virginia. Blizzard conditions were reported in a relatively small area of Maryland, but near-blizzard conditions occurred through a large part of the Mid-Atlantic States. Additionally, some places across Eastern West Virginia, Maryland, Northern Virginia, Washington, D.C., Delaware, Southwestern Pennsylvania, South Central Pennsylvania, Southeastern Pennsylvania and Southern New Jersey received between 20 inches (0.51 m) and 40 inches (1.02 m) of snow, bringing air and Interstate Highway travel to a complete halt. While rail service south and west of Washington, D.C. was suspended, rail travel between DC and Boston was available with limited service. The storm was followed just three days later by the Second North American Blizzard of 2010. A Fisherman’s Guide to Selected Lakes of Northwest Montana, Volume 2

$19.95

This book is a second volume, containing information on 100 additional lakes in Flathead,Lake, Lincoln, Missoula and Sanders counties of northwest Montana. They range from lowland lakes to alpine lakes. Many can be driven to, while many others require a hike. Most fishing guides offer very limited information on a large number of lakes, most of which their authors have never even been near. This book provides detailed information on the lake and surrounding area, as well as directions and fishing tips. All lakes included in this book have been personally visited, photographed, and in most cases fished by the author. The emphasis is on the fisherman’s perspective, but trail and camping information is equally applicable to those who only wish to hike and camp. This volume covers many lakes in the Yaak area, as well as the Jewel Basin and additional waters in the Ten Lakes area near Eureka. Many lakes are found in the Lolo, Flathead, Kootenai and Kaniksu National Forests. Hikes into lakes in the Cabinet Mountains Wilderness and Mission Mountains Wilderness are also included. Photographic opportunities, for both scenery and wildlife, in the areas covered by this book are limitless. While researching this volume, bear (black and grizzly), cougar, wolves, mountain goats, moose, elk, countless deer, and even porcupine were encountered. The book is separated into chapters for each lake. A photograph of the lake is included at the beginning of each chapter. The author is a ten-time Washington State record holder, with certified weight records for five different species of fish. Catch data for several hundred lakes, dating back to 1981, has been provided to Washington State fish biologists. Data dating back to 1994 has also been provided to the State of Montana.Born and raised in northwest Washington and part of a very outdoor oriented family, the author has spent his entire life exploring new places and looking

A Touch More Rare: Harry Berger, Jr., and the Arts of Interpretation

$22

Harry Berger, Jr., has long been one of our most revered and respected literary and cultural critics. Since the late nineties, a stream of remarkable and innovative publications have shown how very broad his interests are, moving from Shakespeare to baroque painting, to Plato, to theories of early culture. In this volume a distinguished group of scholars gathers to celebrate the work of Harry Berger, Jr. To celebrate,in Berger’s words, is to visit something either in great numbers or else frequently-to go away and come back, go away and come back, go away and come back. Celebrating is what you do the second or third time around, but not the first. To celebrate is to revisit. To revisit is to revise. Celebration is the eureka of revision. Not only former students but distinguished colleagues and scholars come together in these pages to discover Berger’s eurekas-to revisit the rigor and originality of his criticism, and occasionally to revise its conclusions, all through the joy of strenuous engagement. Nineteen essays on Berger’s Shakespeare, his Spenser, his Plato, and his Rembrandt, on his theories of interpretation and cultural change and on the ethos of his critical and pedagogical styles, open new approaches to the astonishing ongoing body of work authored by Berger. An introduction by the editors and an afterword by Berger himself place this festival of interpretation in the context of Berger’s intellectual development and the reception of his work from the mid-twentieth century into the first decade of the twenty-first.

This abandoned platform is sometimes referred to as Lower Bay by the general public or Bay Lower by the TTC.The platform was in service from February to September 1966 as part of an interlining experiment, in which the TTC ran trains along three routes, with one matching the subsequent Bloor-Danforth line, and the other two combining parts of the Bloor-Danforth line with the Yonge-University line. The experiment was deemed a failure, largely because delays anywhere quickly cascaded to affect the entire system. Also, as the stations had not been laid out effectively

Excerpt: A Pisco Sour is a Peruvian cocktail containing pisco, lemon or lime juice, egg whites, simple syrup, and regional bitters (like Amargo bitters, though Angostura bitters work if regional bitters are unavailable). However, the national origin of the pisco sour is in dispute by Chile, laying claim to the drink, with Peru having a stronger case, given that Pisco is a city located in their Ica Region. In both countries, the variety of lemon used is what North Americans would call Persian lime but Peruvians call simply “lemons”. In the United States, the drink is usually made with commonly available Lisbon or Eureka lemons. With the increased availability of Pisco and regional bitters outside South America, the Pisco Sour, like the Mojito and Caipirinha, has increased in popularity in the United States. Since 2003, Peru has a National Pisco Sour Day which is celebrated on the first weekend of February. The roots of Pisco itself reach back to the 1500s and stem from Colonial rule. The Spaniards brought the grape to the Peruvian region from Europe, but the King of Spain banned wine in the 17th Century, forcing locals to concoct a different kind of alcohol from the grape. Guillermo Toro Lira in his book “Wings of cherubs” discovered that the precedent of the drink is in the Viceroyalty of Peru, which had pisco mixed with lemon around the 18th century near the “Plaza de Toros de Acho” of Lima. It was called a “Punche” and it was a predecessor of the Pisco punch of the Bank Exchange Bar of San Francisco which contained pisco, lemon and pineapple in the early 1900s. In 1962, the Universidad del Cuyo (Argentina) published a story on the basis of “El Comercio de Iquique”, where it indicates that Eliott Stubb was the creator of “whisky sour”. “El Comercio … More:

American Airborne Pathfinders in World War II

$49.95

Trained in the use of the Eureka radar, holophan lights, and colored ground panels, the pathfinders dropped thirty minutes before the main airborne landing to provide ground guidance for successive airborne jumps. The concept of the pathfinders proved successful and they were used during the remainder of World War II. The story of the airborne pathfinders and the vital part they played in airborne operations during the Second World War has rarely been told. In this new book, Jeff Moran tells the story of the operations they led, the equipment used much of it unique to the pathfinders and has memorialized them by noting, in many cases, the individual teams of pathfinders.

Candace Camp cannot remember a time when she was not interested in creating stories. Born into a newspaper family–her mother had been a reporter and her father was the business manager of the Amarillo, Texas, newspaper–some of Candace’s earliest memories are of making up stories which she played out on the floor of their den with whatever objects were handy. She began writing down her stories when she was about 10, and from then on writing was her favorite form of relaxation. Explains Camp, “I was always very shy and did not talk much. However, in written form, I could express all my thoughts and feelings.”Writing remained only a hobby, though, as Candace attended college at the University of Texas at Austin and West Texas State University, then became a secondary teacher in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. She later moved to North Carolina, where she worked in the trust department of a bank. It was there that she discovered the romance novel in modern form and started to write her first romance. She also began law school at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and while she was there, she finished her first novel, entitled Bonds of Love. Ms. Camp credits the rigorous training of law school with teaching her the discipline necessary to finish a book. Bonds of Love was published by Jove Publishing in 1978, under the pseudonym Lisa Gregory. Ms. Camp gave up the practice of law to devote her time to writing. Two pseudonyms, 43 books, and 22 years later, Candace Camp writes under her own name for MIRA–and still loves creating stories. She has been married for 20 years and has an 18-year-old daughter, who has started on her own careerpath in the field of acting.
