I need help finding an alternative Hoover carpet cleaner for my Steamvac!?
I just bought one today SteamVac (total precious and I probably will not get my money worth, but that's neither here nor there), and in one shot glass full of Ultra detergent used Hoover. There is a generic brand, which can easily buy that will achieve similar results? Hoover warns not to use different brands but of course I think it's cuz its proprietary soap. Anyone can help me?
We used a similar advert Hoover steam vac for years and began to buy some years cheaper generic and have no problems now. You may be using a bit more than necessary, however.

”Keep America American”: Great Depression, government intervention, and conservative response in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, 1920s–1940. $49.99 This study of one rural county in western Pennsylvania during the Great Depression highlights people’s response to government recovery programs. Rural folks in Somerset County experienced the depression before the crash in 1929, and throughout the 1920s, miners and farmers in the area found ways to cope with rising unemployment and declining farm prices. Miners used the strike to fight for better conditions; farmers organized into cooperatives to secure the best prices for their products. Each promulgated a set of values that reflected their vision of America. The 1920s was only a prelude to the economic downturn in the 1930s, when rural folks had to adapt to changes in the way that the government approached the economy. Many residents in Somerset County favored the approaches of Herbert Hoover, who honored their cherished values of thrift, self-help, and minimal government. For similar reasons, they also supported Republican Governor Gifford Pinchot, until he began to implement new taxes and to consolidate power at the state level. To many conservatives and localists, Pinchot resembled Franklin Roosevelt, who entered office promising federal assistance to the needy.;When Roosevelt took office, he implemented programs that often contradicted their cherished values. He passed costly federal direct and work relief programs that ran counter to their belief in private charity, self-help, and local control. His and Governor George Earle’s “new deals” also included farm policy that set limits on production and forced processors to pay a tax and consumers to pay more for food. County residents generally favored the laissez faire, supply and demand model for the economy. Even more troubling to the county’s localists and conservatives was the labor legislation that Roosevelt and Earle approved. The National Labor Relations Act, passed in 1935, and Pennsylvania’s Labor Relations Act, passed two years later, forced companies to recognize unions, and residents believed that |

1920: The Year of the Six Presidents $18.95 The presidential election of 1920 was one of the most dramatic ever. For the only time in the nation’s history, six once-and-future presidents hoped to end up in the White House: Woodrow Wilson, Warren G. Harding, Calvin Coolidge, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Herbert Hoover, and Theodore Roosevelt. It was an election that saw unprecedented levels of publicity — the Republicans outspent the Democrats by 4 to 1 — and it was the first to garner extensive newspaper and newsreel coverage. It was also the first election in which women could vote. Meanwhile, the 1920 census showed that America had become an urban nation — automobiles, mass production, chain stores, and easy credit were transforming the economy and America was limbering up for the most spectacular decade of its history, the roaring ’20s. Award-winning historian David Pietrusza’s riveting new work presents a dazzling panorama of presidential personalities, ambitions, plots, and counterplots — a picture of modern America at the crossroads. |

Excerpt: Ronald Wilson Reagan (February 6, 1911 June 5, 2004) was the 40th President of the United States (19811989) and the 33rd Governor of California (19671975). Born in Tampico, Illinois, Reagan moved to Los Angeles, California in the 1930s. He began a career as an actor, first in films and later television, appearing in 52 movie productions and gaining enough success to become a household name. Though largely a B film actor, some of his most notable roles are in Knute Rockne, All American and Kings Row. Reagan served as president of the Screen Actors Guild, and later spokesman for General Electric (GE); his start in politics occurred during his work for GE. Originally a member of the Democratic Party, he switched to the Republican Party in 1962. After delivering a rousing speech in support of Barry Goldwater’s presidential candidacy in 1964, he was persuaded to seek the California governorship, winning two years later and again in 1970. He was defeated in his run for the Republican presidential nomination in 1968 as well as 1976, but won both the nomination and election in 1980. As president, Reagan implemented new political and economic initiatives. His supply-side economic policies, dubbed “Reaganomics”, were aimed at controlling inflation and spurring economic growth through tax cuts, reduced business regulation, and reduced growth in government spending. In his first term he sur… More: |

The series began with The Campfire Girls of Roselawn, or, a Strange Message from the Air. But it had been that way for a long time, and she could think of no way of escaping to happier conditions. Mrs. Hoover was no relation to her at all. Bessie had a father and mother, but they had left her with Mrs. Hoover a long time before, and she could scarcely remember them, but she heard about them, her father especially, whenever she did something that Mrs. Hoover didn’t like.” |

A History of US Communications Intelligence during WWII: Policy and Administration $25.86 With the onset of World War II, the American organizations responsible for the vital wartime function of communications intelligence (COMINT) were forced to change drastically. In addition to the daunting challenges of rapid operational expansion, the peacetime processes of U.S. Army and Navy COMINT proved inadequate to support active military operations on a worldwide scale. With national survival and individual lives at stake, more information, and its timely dissemination to both U.S. forces and those of its close ally, the United Kingdom, quickly became a top priority. “A History of U.S. Communications Intelligence during World War II: Policy and Administration” tells the story of the profound organizational changes wrought on U.S. COMINT by rapid expansion, urgent requirements for information, and international agreements. While the services never completely solved the problems posed by these challenges, by war’s end they had created structures and implemented policies which, however cumbersome, achieved high levels of combat support. After covering the initial year of expansion, this study examines such issues as: The Army-British COMINT agreement of 1943 and the ENIGMA crisis; British-U.S. Navy COMINT agreements in 1943 and 1944; Jurisdictional problems regarding clandestine communications; Army and Navy movement to full cooperation, 1944-1945; Internal organizational developments in the Army and Navy. In addition to this comprehensive cover of organizational issues, “A History of U.S. Communications Intelligence during World War II” also sheds new light on the U.S.-UK controversy over U.S. denial of Alan Turing’s access to scrambler technology developed at Bell Labs, conflicts between the Director of Naval Intelligence and J. Edgar Hoover’s FBI over sharing intelligence information, and the tension between Army and Navy COMINT and the OSS, which had its own methods of obtaining data from British intelligence sources. A Twist of Lemon $18.95 Fearless, ambitious and determined to uphold the law, Mabel Walker Willebrandt puts Prohibition violators behind bars years before the country ever hears of Al Capone.Prohibition turns life upside down for Mabel. In a time when powerful women are an anomaly, she leaves her Los Angeles law practice in 1921 to become the nation’s assistant attorney general for Prohibition enforcement. An incorruptible law enforcer, she fights to establish her authority. By 1923 she is renowned for prosecuting some of the most notorious criminals who regularly violate the law for financial gain. Despite a string of successful convictions, her career is hindered by her refusal to cooperate with politicians who accept bribes and turn a blind eye to the illicit liquor trade. This kaleidoscopic historical novel integrates southern California into the nation’s Prohibition narrative. Violence in Los Angeles escalates into a full-blown rum war in the mid-1920s. Hijackers attack liquor shipments; smugglers hire gunmen, and killers threaten the civil peace. Corrupt Prohibition agents and policemen frustrate Mabel’s efforts. Tainted evidence and confiscated liquor that conveniently goes missing impede prosecutions. In a meeting in Los Angeles, Mabel learns of new policing techniques to catch illegal liquor dealers and their hired killers; however, she knows that the department’s actions violate the civil rights of the individuals it pursues. She returns to Washington to confer with Bureau of Intelligence Director J. Edgar Hoover and voice her concerns. Together, they devise an undercover operation to ensnare the rum-ring operatives-bypassing the LAPD-which ultimately results in indictments against some of the most infamous smugglers of the decade.Mabel Walker Willebrandt’s remarkable life parallels the country’s transition from a rural to an urban society and prefigures the emergence of women in national politics. “A Twist of Lemon” vividly tells the story of a fiercely independent |

All A Young Man Could Ask For $3.99 Henry Feller, just coming of age as the Twentieth Century began, found himself, by the luck of the draw, at the epicenter of his country’s new role as a reluctant world power. From the rebellions in the Philippines and China to the Roosevelt Safari in Africa, Henry was in the middle of the action. What he saw, he wrote about. Men of action like Dan Daly, Fred Funston and young Lt. Doug MacArthur, former President Teddy Roosevelt and his son Kermit, legendary white hunter Fred Selous, Quaker engineer Bert Hoover and his geologist wife, Lou. And Emma Fontaine. And of course there was the erotic Tamanti. In combination, they offered all a young man could ask for. |

All Governments Lie!: The Life and Times of Rebel Journalist I. F. Stone $33.99 Boasting equal parts scholarship and style, "All Governments Lie" is a highly readable, groundbreaking, and timely look at I. F. Stone — one of America's most independent and revered journalists, whose work carries the same immediacy it did almost a half century ago, highlighting the ever-present need for dissenting voices. In the world of Washington political journalism, notorious for trading independence for access, I. F. "Izzy" Stone was so unique as to be a genuine wonder. Always skeptical — "All governments lie, but disaster lies in wait for countries whose officials smoke the same hashish they give out," he memorably quipped — Stone was ahead of the pack on the most pivotal twentieth-century trends: the rise of Hitler and Fascism, disastrous Cold War foreign policies, covert actions of the FBI and CIA, the greatness of the Civil Rights movement, the horror of Vietnam, the strengths and weaknesses of the antiwar movement, the disgrace of Iran-contra, and the class greed of Reaganomics. His constant barrage against J. Edgar Hoover earned him close monitoring by the FBI from the Great Depression through the Vietnam War, and even an investigation for espionage during the fifties. After making his mark on feisty New York dailies and in The Nation — scoring such scoops as the discovery of American cartels doing business with Nazi Germany — Stone became unemployable during the dark days of McCarthyism. Out of desperation he started his four-page I. F. Stone's Weekly, which ran from 1953 to 1971. The first journalist to label the Gulf of Tonkin affair a sham excuse to escalate the Vietnam War, Stone garnered worldwide fans, was read in the corridors of power, and became wealthy. Later, the "world's oldest living freshman" learned Greek to write his bestseller The Trial of Socrates. Here, for the first time, acclaimed journalist and author Myra MacPherson brings the legendary Stone into sharp focus. |
